Ingredient Profile

Ashwagandha

Also known as: Withania somnifera · Indian Ginseng · Winter Cherry · KSM-66 · Sensoril

Adaptogenic root from traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The strongest research base of any adaptogen for cortisol reduction and stress response. Effect varies dramatically between extracts.

What it is

Withania somnifera is a small shrub whose roots contain withanolides — steroidal lactones that modulate the HPA axis (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal, your stress response system). The active ingredient content varies massively between products. KSM-66 (5% withanolides, root-only extract) and Sensoril (10% withanolides, root + leaf) are the two standardized extracts with the most clinical data.

How it works

Reduces cortisol secretion in response to stress. Modulates GABA receptors (mild calming effect). Some evidence for T3 thyroid support. Does not cause sedation or cognitive dulling — the calming effect is parasympathetic-activating rather than CNS-depressing.

What the research says

Evidence strength is ranked against the total body of peer-reviewed research, not marketing claims.

StrongReduces serum cortisol in stressed adults (8+ weeks)
StrongReduces anxiety scores on validated scales
ModerateImproves subjective sleep quality
ModerateSupports testosterone levels in men with low baseline
PreliminaryImproves VO2 max and strength output

Who it helps

Adults with chronic stress, sleep-disrupting anxiety, or cortisol-driven brain fog. People recovering from burnout. Knowledge workers who feel 'wired and tired.' Athletes or lifters in a cutting phase (supports cortisol balance during caloric deficit).

Who should skip it

People with autoimmune conditions (can over-stimulate the immune system — ashwagandha is a Solanaceae/nightshade). People on thyroid medication (may interact). Pregnant people (avoid). People taking sedatives or benzodiazepines (additive effect).

Typical dose

300-600 mg of standardized KSM-66 per day, or 125-250 mg of Sensoril. Clinical trials showing cortisol reduction used 600 mg KSM-66 split into two doses. Effects are cumulative over 4-12 weeks.

How to take it

Take with food. Split doses (morning + evening) for steady cortisol support. Skip the non-standardized 'ashwagandha root powder' products — you have no idea how much withanolide you're getting. Stick to named extracts.

Common misuses

People expect immediate calming. Give it 4-8 weeks. People take it indefinitely — most traditional protocols cycle it (8-12 weeks on, 2-4 weeks off). Some people report emotional blunting after months of continuous use.
