Ingredient Profile

Curcumin

Also known as: Turmeric extract · Diferuloylmethane · Meriva · Longvida · Theracurmin

Polyphenol from turmeric root. Strong anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective data — but standard turmeric powder is nearly useless. The formulation is the entire game.

What it is

Curcumin is the primary curcuminoid in turmeric (Curcuma longa), comprising roughly 2-5% of the dried root. Plain curcumin is extensively metabolized by the liver and poorly absorbed — plasma levels from standard turmeric are barely detectable. Enhanced formulations (Meriva phytosome, Longvida SLCP, Theracurmin nanoparticle, BCM-95) raise bioavailability 10-30x.

How it works

Inhibits NF-κB signaling (a master regulator of inflammatory gene expression). Crosses the blood-brain barrier in bioavailable forms and reduces microglial activation — chronic microglial activation is an early driver of cognitive decline. Also binds and destabilizes amyloid-beta plaques in vitro.

What the research says

Evidence strength is ranked against the total body of peer-reviewed research, not marketing claims.

StrongReduces systemic inflammation markers (CRP, IL-6)
ModerateImproves memory and attention in older adults (Longvida 18-month RCT)
ModerateMild antidepressant effect as adjunct or standalone
StrongReduces symptoms of osteoarthritis comparable to NSAIDs

Who it helps

Adults over 50 with low-grade chronic inflammation. People with joint pain. Anyone with a family history of Alzheimer's (small but suggestive long-term cognition data). Knowledge workers dealing with post-illness or post-burnout brain fog.

Who should skip it

People on blood thinners (curcumin has mild antiplatelet activity). People with gallstones or biliary obstruction (curcumin stimulates bile flow). Stop 1 week before surgery. Anyone on iron supplementation — curcumin chelates iron.

Typical dose

Dose depends entirely on formulation. Meriva: 500-1000 mg/day. Longvida: 400-1000 mg/day. Theracurmin: 180-360 mg/day. Standard turmeric powder at any dose: effectively zero plasma curcumin. Black pepper (piperine) boosts absorption of plain curcumin ~20x but irritates some stomachs.

How to take it

Take with a fat-containing meal. Choose a named enhanced formulation — Meriva, Longvida, Theracurmin, or BCM-95 — not generic 'turmeric 95% curcuminoids.' Give it 8 weeks minimum for cognitive or inflammation outcomes.

Common misuses

People take turmeric powder from the spice aisle and expect drug-like effects. Bioavailability is the constraint, not the dose. People take it without fat and waste the capsule. People pair it with iron supplements and wonder why their ferritin drops.
